Description
The Wieczno Lake Complex, located in the Municipality of Płużnica in northern Poland, comprises three post-glacial lakes – Wieczno North, Wieczno South and Lake Płużnica – covering almost 378 hectares in total. Historically connected as a single water body, the lakes have undergone substantial hydrological changes due to drainage and water-management interventions, while supporting local fisheries, agriculture, recreation and valuable wetland habitats.
Challenges
The lake complex faces altered hydrological connectivity, declining water levels and volumes, nutrient pressures and insufficiently coordinated restoration efforts. The shallow lakes are particularly vulnerable to excessive vegetation growth and terrestrialisation, while agricultural activities in the surrounding catchment may contribute to nutrient loading.
Currently Used Restoration Measures
Existing restoration activities have been relatively small-scale and fragmented, with no integrated restoration programme or comprehensive monitoring system covering the entire complex. Through FERRO, the Municipality of Płużnica will establish a detailed baseline, investigate nutrient sources and pathways, and pilot an appropriate restoration solution while monitoring its effectiveness. The project will also develop a comprehensive Lake Restoration Action Plan outlining future interventions, investment needs, funding opportunities and implementation pathways.
