From lake restoration to the field: FERRO completes second barley harvest at Ormstrup
The FERRO team has recently completed the second barley harvest of our three-year field experiment near Lake Ormstrup, Denmark. The trial is investigating the potential of nutrient-rich lake sediment as a soil amendment and fertiliser, testing different application rates both with and without biostimulants.
At the experimental site, sediment recovered from Lake Ormstrup is applied to selected field plots, while untreated plots serve as controls. Barley plants and soil samples are collected throughout the growing season to monitor crop development, biomass and grain yield, nutrient uptake, and changes in soil properties.
The latest harvest marks another important step in assessing whether materials recovered through freshwater restoration can be reused as valuable resources in agriculture, contributing to more circular approaches to nutrient management.
The harvested plant and soil samples are now being analysed, with results to follow. While waiting for the results, you can check out the factsheets for each of FERRO’s demonstration sites here!
