FERRO invites contributions to a European lake-restoration database

FERRO invites contributions to a European lake-restoration database

One of the main goals of FERRO is to develop a lake-restoration database to collect and review knowledge and experiences from lake and reservoir restoration projects across Europe. Led by the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), this initiative aims to support the lake-restoration community in identifying and selecting effective restoration measures for different lake ecosystems.

The data collection will focus on restoration measures, monitoring approaches, restoration outcomes and associated costs. Relevant information may come from a variety of sources, including local and regional authorities, scientific publications, reports and other grey literature. Existing reports, publications and links to relevant projects are also welcome, including materials available in local languages.

Researchers, practitioners, consulting companies and water-management organisations are invited to contribute information on lakes and reservoirs that have undergone restoration measures in the past. By bringing together knowledge from previous restoration efforts, the database will help build a more comprehensive understanding of the measures implemented, their outcomes and the lessons learned.

The collected information will be reviewed and compiled into a detailed database of restoration projects and experiences. The database will subsequently undergo internal and external testing to help ensure its usefulness for the wider lake-restoration community.

This activity forms part of FERRO’s work to develop a detailed restoration plan and strengthen the knowledge base available to those working towards healthier lake ecosystems. By making information from previous restoration efforts more accessible, the database aims to support evidence-based decisions on suitable restoration measures and contribute to more effective lake management across Europe.

If you have relevant information or experience to share, we encourage you to contribute through the questionnaire.

Your contribution can help build a valuable knowledge resource for researchers, practitioners and organisations working to restore and protect Europe's lakes and reservoirs.
