FERRO at the ALSO-SIL 2026 Conference

FERRO at the ALSO-SIL 2026 Conference

FERRO participated in this year’s ALSO-SIL joint meeting, held between 12-16 May, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Sponsored by the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ALSO) and International Society of Limnology (SIL), the ALSO-SIL joint meeting, titled Aquatic Confluence: Science, People, Knowledge, brought together scientists from the freshwater and marine realm, encouraging exchange of knowledge and experience. It motivated scientists, stakeholders and knowledge keepers to network among each other, addressing how to tackle society’s aquatic habitats and water resources issues.

FERRO’s coordinator, Tallent Dadi (UFZ) took part in а session titled  A ‘Silver Bullet Assessment’ of Nature-based Solutions (and other measures) for Lakes. He co-lead the talk with Bryan Spears (UKCEH), Miquel Lurling (WUR), and Rowen Monks (NMBU).  Together, with the meeting participants, they discussed real-world applications for lake restoration factors, including causes and consequences of internal phosphorus loading.

The main focus on the second special session co-chaired by FERRO was titled Sediment derived nutrients, cyanobacteria and climate change. It was led by Olga Tammeorg (UH) and Gertrud Nürnberg (Freshwater Research) where they discussed the challenge of internal phosphorus loading becoming more and more evident.

Additionally, FERRO was featured with posters, one of which showcased the latest updates on the project’s solar-driven pumping system for removing phosphorus from water, developed by our partners from the Biology Centre CAS. This technology was recently presented to the Czech audience in an interview, which you can watch here.

Other FERRO partners shared different insights into lake management and restoration: Petr Porcal (Biology Centre CAS) presented the great potential in phosphorus recycling by using a new mobile solution for hypolimnetic withdrawal. Luis Braune (UFZ) shared expertise in capturing phosphorus using iron salts. Anna-Marie Klamt, Jonas Stage Sø and Theis Kragh (SDU) took part, giving talks on challenges and opportunities for sustainable lake restoration and the knowledge gap surrounding methane emissions.

The ALSO-SIL joint meeting successfully gathered experts, stakeholders and knowledge keepers, motivating networking and experience sharing. You can read more on the event here
